About:
Modern English, formed in Colchester, Essex, in 1977, maintains its original lineup of Robbie Grey, Gary McDowell, Mick Conroy, and Stephen Walker. Revered as post-punk pioneers, their resurgence is fueled by new generations discovering their music, leading to sold-out tours and a major 2023 Cruel World Festival appearance. Their latest album, 1 2 3 4, produced by Mario McNulty and mixed at Abbey Road, retains their post-punk essence with energetic, raw recordings made during the COVID-19 lockdown. Thematically, it reflects Grey’s introspections on personal and political matters, echoing the band’s legacy from their influential debut, Mesh & Lace, to their iconic hit “I Melt With You.”
